Proposed Consortium Technical Objectives

The IRFGC is currently (Spring 2003) striving to define its global community objectives in terms of one primary objective per technical subcommittee. At the present time, draft proposed consortium objectives consist of

  •  Genome-wide oligo chip made publicly available for use by 2004-5
  •  Achieve tagging of 90% of rice genes using a variety of mutant collections by 2005
  •  Internet integrated global network of rice functional genomics databases established by end of 2006
  •  Robust high-throughput gene functional verification systems developed and available by end of 2007
  •  Function of 60% of rice genes functionally characterized by 2010

Near Term Consortium Activities

  •  Subcommittees: to report back by end of April 2003
    •  Activities
    •  Principles of sharing

  •  Summary papers on various resources
    •  e.g., mutant stocks

  •  Strategic position paper
    •  Model upon Arabidopsis but consider uniqueness of rice
    •  Useful for different agencies to galvanize and sustain government support
